Student Legal Services

Welcome to the Indiana University Student Legal Services homepage. Student Legal Services is a non-profit law office that has been serving IU Bloomington students since 1971. We are conveniently located on campus at 703 East Seventh Street and serve the IU student body by offering legal advice and representation. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with our services. If you are a currently registered IU Bloomington student and need assistance with a legal matter, help is as close as a visit to our office.

Concerned About Your Legal Position?

If you find yourself concerned about your legal position, Student Legal Services may be able to assist you. The office, located at the corner of Seventh and Fess (across from Dunn Meadow), is a university-funded program which helps students with many different legal issues. While about one third of our cases concerns landlord-tenant relations, our staff is equipped to deal with a wide variety of legal issues.

Follow this link to our page with a list of basic coverage provided by Student Legal Services.

To receive our assistance, you need to come into our office and fill out an intake sheet and a fact sheet. Be sure to bring any documents related to your question when you come to complete the intake sheet. We will then schedule an appointment for you with one of our interns, usually a wait of two and one-half days. Student Legal Services is staffed with second and third-year law students who work under the close supervision of four staff attorneys. If your case requires a court appearance, you will be represented by one of our attorneys and a certified intern.

Alternatively, you can now complete an intake form on the web and submit it to be scheduled with an appointment.

Please keep in mind that Student Legal Services encourages students to use our serviceBEFORE legal complications arise.

Important

There are some areas in which Student Legal Services can give advice but not representation, such as complaints against the university, complex business matters and marriage dissolutions which involve extensive property settlements or child custody issues. There are a few situations where SLS cannot provide any assistance. For instance, SLS does not prepare wills nor does it represent one student against another in most instances. Since both students would be eligible for our assistance, it would be a conflict of interest to advise either student.

One excellent resource available on campus for dealing with student/student problems is the Student Mediation Program. While this may not provide a legal solution to your problem, mediation can be a very useful process in helping both students resolve their dispute with the assistance of a trained mediator. The administrative office for the Student Mediation Program is located in the Student Advocates office, Owen Hall 200. You can reach them by telephone (855-0761).

Except for these and a few other situations, SLS handles many different kinds of civil cases and performs a variety of counseling activities normally performed by any attorney.

If you have any questions about our services, please call us at 855-7867. Student Legal Services is open Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM.

Thank you for visiting our site. Student Legal Services hopes we can be of assistance to you!
